Lush, sardonic, and morbidly funny, this is travel writing for anyone who has ever been spiritually undone by a heatwave, a crowd, or a disappointing snack.

In this gothic, baroque, and darkly comic travel memoir, Aiden staggers from one Mediterranean absurdity to the next. Hungover in hotel rooms, pursued by flies with theological convictions, mocked by the gods of sun, wind, tourism, and stock rotation, he chronicles his slow unraveling through harbours, cafés, restaurants, and airports with all the doomed romanticism of a Byronic hero who accidentally booked a budget holiday.

Part travelogue, part lament, part theatrical confession, this book is a love letter to ennui, to ridiculousness, and to those strangely holy moments that bloom amid suncream, humidity, and despair.

A portrait of a holiday gone wrong—beautifully, catastrophically wrong—it asks what it means to seek meaning in a world drowning in slogans, sugar, and noise.

Richly illustrated throughout with 30 dark, atmospheric pencil drawings, that bring the tragicomic world of Aiden La-Ruins to life.

What will break you?

Unsettling, moving, and action-packed, Beyond Darkness is a relentless plunge into madness.

The city is collapsing. A phenomenon spreads through it like poison — twisting minds, swallowing people whole, leaving behind only fear, violence, and silence. To the outside world, it looks like terrorism. But the truth is far worse.

After a personal tragedy leaves her emotionally shattered, eighteen-year-old Tina finds herself pulled into the nightmare when she encounters it firsthand. Rescued by a fractured group of researchers who have spent years studying the phenomenon, she discovers that what is happening cannot be explained by science alone.

At the centre of it all is a mysterious figure known only as the Hunter of Darkness.

As the city descends further into chaos, Tina and the group are forced together through necessity, guilt, and survival. But the deeper they search for answers, the more they realise that it may already be too late. And that what waits may be far worse than any of them imagined.

Bound together against impossible odds, they make one final choice:

Stand defiant against the darkness. Or succumb to what lies beyond it.

“We’re the ones who could never find meaning. At one point in my life, I thought I had. I tried to follow a path. Make sense of it all. But the path turned into a maze, and I got lost. And every turn just led me back to the start… except the start wasn’t the same any longer. It made me wonder if there was ever a path at all.”
Includes detailed illustrations throughout.
